Tony Shalhoub had a fine time of it, back working with his one-time "Wings" castmate and buddy, Steven Weber, when the latter came aboard his "Monk" series for a guest stint on the season that launches July 7.
Weber plays "a shock jock like Howard Stern, and Monk has to go head-to-head with this guy," says the Emmy-winning star and executive producer of the USA Network hit.
According to him, we'll also get to see more and more glimpses of his obsessive/compulsive detective's life story in the new season. "In one of the episodes, we see some old 8mm home movies of Monk and his brother, Ambrose, when they were real young," says Shalhoub. "Then we have another episode where Monk goes back to a class reunion at Berkeley, and it flashes back to Monk and Trudy (his late wife) when they were in college. And in the second half of the season, which we start shooting in late August, we're going to have an episode where we meet Monk's father. Viewers might know that Monk's father abandoned the family when the kids were young. Now he's going to make an appearance. We haven't cast it yet; we're throwing out the net."
And, of course, Monk's already extremely sensitive sensibilities will be sorely tested this season. "In one episode, there's a two-week garbage strike in San Francisco, with bags piling up everywhere, and that sends Monk into a real state. Then there's another episode where Monk has some solvent thrown in his face and he loses his eyesight. He has to wallow in self-pity for a long time, then has to figure out the case without his eyesight."
